Help / MAC vendor lookup
MAC vendor lookup
Finds the manufacturer behind a MAC address from the IEEE registry, and recognizes randomized (private) and multicast addresses.
How to use it
- Paste a full MAC address or just the first 6 hex digits. Any common format works: colons, hyphens, Cisco dots or none.
- Press Look up.
Reading the results
- Vendor / OUI
- The first half of a MAC address identifies the manufacturer that registered it with the IEEE.
- MA-L / MA-M / MA-S
- IEEE block sizes: large (6 hex digits), medium (7) and small (9). Smaller blocks are matched first.
- Locally administered
- Not assigned by a manufacturer. Usually a phone or laptop using a randomized “private” address, or a virtual machine.
- Multicast
- An address for a group of devices, not a single device.
Examples
- 00:0C:29:3A:1B:2C VMware virtual machine
- B8:27:EB:00:11:22 Raspberry Pi
- DA:A1:19:00:00:01 A randomized address
From the command line

| q | MAC address or prefix (6–12 hex digits) |

Questions
Why is my phone’s MAC “locally administered”?
Modern phones and laptops use a random MAC per Wi-Fi network for privacy, so there is no manufacturer to look up.
How current is the vendor list?
It’s refreshed from the IEEE registry on the 3rd of each month.
Limitations
- A vendor match tells you who made the network chip, which isn’t always the brand on the device.
